Each cable is fitted with alligator clips at both ends, which are designed to securely attach to battery terminals.

High-quality jumper cables are often color-coded; red for positive (+) connections and black for negative (-) connections, which aids in preventing polarity errors during use.

Functionality

The primary function of jumper cables is to connect a functioning battery to a depleted battery, enabling the transfer of electrical current to start an engine. The process involves a few critical steps:

1. Preparation: Ensure both vehicles are turned off, and the batteries are in a safe condition for connection.
2. Connection: The red cable is first attached to the positive terminal of the dead battery, followed by the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the good battery. The black cable is then attached to the negative terminal of the good battery, and finally, the other end of the black cable is connected to a grounded metal surface on the vehicle with the dead battery, minimizing the risk of sparks near the battery.
3. Starting the Engine: The vehicle with the good battery is started first, allowing the current to flow into the dead battery. After a few minutes, the vehicle with the dead battery can be attempted to be started.
4. Disconnection: Once the vehicle starts, cables should be removed in reverse order to avoid any short circuits.
